2005 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Preview BY JOHN CHOPACK, FEBRUARY 14, 2005

It's here again, the annual AAOS conference. Thousands are ready to descend on Washington, D.C. the week of February 21st to learn of new surgical techniques, new products and to develop business and relationships. While it is hard to predict what will be the "news" of the Academy, we are sure there will be some shockers. Every year the Academy offers some major acquisitions and product approvals. Last year Smith & Nephew announced its acquisition of Midland Medical Technologies (MMT) and in 2003 Synthes announced the acquisition of Spine Solutions.

We guarantee that our follow-up AAOS will be full of reports of hot concepts, acquisitions and product launches. However, we thought it would be a good idea to preview the scheduled presentations and provide what we considered to be the most interesting sessions. We have provided a schedule of these sessions so you won't miss them.

After previewing the scheduled presentations we found that one of the hottest topics is minimally invasive surgery and surgical navigation. We identified six exciting presentations through Sunday. These include "Minimal Incision and Computerized Assisted Total Hip Replacement: The Promise and The Pitfalls", "Less and Minimally Invasive Total Joint Replacement: Pro and Con", and "Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement: Video Techniques and Results to Date". Alternate bearing surfaces seem to be a hot topic again at the Academy and we suggest checking out "Technology 2005: Alternate Bearing Surfaces: The Good, Bad and Indifferent". We were somewhat surprised to see the limited amount, of what we considered, exciting spine presentations. The most of exciting, "The Aging Spine: Disc Replacement, Repair and Regeneration" is worth hearing on Thursday. We also suggest checking out "Surface Arthroplasty of the Hip". This is a concept that has gain significant traction in Europe and nearing the first FDA approval of a total hip resurfacing in the U.S.

We hope all enjoy the Academy and look forward to seeing you there.
