SpineVision's PediGuard Hits 1000th Surgery Milestone BY SHELLY ACHAIBAR, DECEMBER 27, 2005

SpineVision's PediGuard device reached the milestone of performing its 1000th spine surgery procedure. This device is the first and only FDA-cleared Class II free-hand electronic pedicle preparation instrument. The tool is able to detect possible cortex perforation in the vertebral pedicle or vertebral body.

The accuracy of pedicle screw placement is an important issue in spine surgery and a reported 14% of screws are misplaced during insertion. Poor placement can cause permanent damage to the spinal cord, including paraplegia or quadriplegia. PediGuard is the first patented, wireless, handheld instrument capable of accurately detecting changes in tissue type. This product facilitates surgery by allowing real-time feedback to surgeons giving them new additional information and while requiring no change in surgical technique.

SpineVision, a privately owned company based in Paris with US headquarters in Atlanta, launched PediGuard as its breakthrough product into the US spine market. The company hopes to offer future products with innovative designs to improve the safety of surgical procedures as well as reduce operating room time during minimally invasive surgery.
