Another Acquisition in 2006: DePuy Acquires Hand Innovations
BY JOHN CHOPACK, JANUARY 19, 2006
DePuy's acquisition of Hand Innovations is significant in the orthopedic space for several reasons. First, it marks the third acquisition of the year already following both Stryker's acquisition of PlasmaSol and Kyphon's purchase of InnoSpine. We, along with several other analysts and industry experts, have predicted significant orthopedic M&A activity in 2006.
It also marks the second large extremity transaction in 2006. If you remember, Small Bone Innovations, Inc. announced the close of a $42 million financing a week or two ago. This follows a 2005 in which 4 of the approximate 16 orthopedic transactions were extremity deals. Look for more consolidation to occur in 2006.
Hand Innovations, Inc. markets implants for fractures of the upper extremity. Their leading revenue generating product, the Distal Volar Plate "DVP", is one of the most popular volar plates on the market to date.
We want to congratulate Dr. Jorge Orbay and William F. Doyle of WFD Ventures for a successful development and eventual sale of Hand Innovations.
