Orthopedic News Roundup 20-Apr-06
BY HUYEN NGUYEN, APRIL 20, 2006
Many orthopedic companies will be reporting their 1Q:06 results in the next few weeks. The table below provides a listing of conference call dial-in numbers and webcasts for the investment community. How the overall orthopedic industry fared in the first quarter of 2006 will be clear in the next two weeks. However, so far this week DePuy has already reported its 1Q:06 (subscription required), with revenue growing 8% in constant currency--its hip revenue grew 10%, knee was up 5% and total reconstructive rose 7%. Since DePuy (Johnson & Johnson) and Stryker are always the first two orthopedic companies to report, they tend to set the pace for the rest of industry.
Also, just a reminder that Stryker Corp. will be reporting its 1Q:06 earnings results at 5:00PM EDT today; check the table below for dial-in and webcast information.
Appointment: Founded in 2002, Innovasis is a manufacturer and developer of spinal implants based in Salt Lake City, Utah. The company hired Martin Crous, Ph.D. as Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Dr. Crous was previously with Synthes and Medtronic Sofamor Danek. Smith & Nephew's Advanced Wound Management division appointed David Hoffman as Senior Vice President, Business Development & Strategic Planning. Mr. Hoffman was with Boston Scientific's Endosurgery Group for ten years.
Clinical Update: Biocoral, Inc. presented a report on a randomized, double blind, multi-center clinical trial of its lead product in hip fractures associated with bone demineralization. The Company hosted a symposium where independent monitoring agencies concluded that the company's leading product, Biocoral® provides therapeutic benefit for treatment of such fractures.
Earnings: Johnson & Johnson reported its 1Q:06 results with sales up 1.2% to $13 billion compared to 1Q:05. Excluding acquisitions related charges, net income for the quarter was $3.0 billion or a 4.5% increase from a year ago. In 1Q:06, excluding the effect of foreign currency, DePuy took in $1.0 billion or an 8% increase from 1Q:05; U.S grew 6% and international grew 2%.
Legal: In the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, Medtronic's vascular and spinal divisions filed a lawsuit against Kyphon claiming that Kyphon has violated its patents on a minimum of four patents related to balloon dilatation catheters and spinal treatment. Medtronic is seeking injunctive relief and monetary damages from Kyphon.
Mergers & Acquisitions: Integra LifeSciences Holdings Corporation is acquiring Miltex, Inc. for approximately $101 million in cash. Miltex is a provider of surgical instruments. For FY:05, Miltex generated revenue of $62 million with EBITDA of $13 million.
Product Introduction & Update: Scandius BioMedical, Inc. has launched the TriTis™ Tibial Fixation System. The TriTis™ System is intended for patients with a torn ACL. Smith & Nephew's Endoscopy division launched the Hip Positioning System; this system allows surgeon to treat the affected hip joint using arthroscopic techniques. dj Orthopedics, Inc. launched a new protective headgear intended to help reduce head trauma among soccer (aka football) players.
Product Recall: Lat week, Blackstone Medical announced that it has issued a recall of its ICON™ Modular Fixation System. The system is a spinal fusion device that includes screws, connectors and rods. The recall was due to reports of construct loosening in the early postoperative period.
Regulatory Update: Orthovita has received an FDA approval for further changes to the protocol of its CORTOSS® IDE pivotal study. The new approval allows Orthovita to reduce the number of total patients enrolled in its study and increase the randomization ratio of patients treated with CORTOSS to patients in the control group treated with an approved PMMA bone cement.
Miscellaneous: Although, OrthoSoft has not yet released its earnings, it is estimated that it will reduce its annual loss from $4.2 million to $3.2 million. If you are not listening to Stryker's conference call at 5:00PM, then check out a live surgery webcast from Methodist North Hospital, featuring a total knee replacement.
