Orthopedic Surgeons & Supplies Needed for Indonesian Quake Victims
BY KARYN OLSON, MAY 31, 2006
Indonesia has seen a lot of seismic activity in the past few months. The latest was a 6.3 earthquake that hit the island of Java, creating an enormous medical emergency. Thus far, the quake has killed 5,700 people and over 200,000 are homeless. While doctors there say they have many of the required medical supplies, one news source said they are in need of orthopedic surgeons and supplies, as well as neurologists.
According to the World Health Organization, these are the Priority Needs in the region for the anticipated 5000 orthopedic and trauma-related cases:
Orthopedic supplies (plates, splints, etc)
Antibiotics for open fractures
Field hospitals for rehabilitation after orthopedic surgery
Shelters and tents around hospitals for discharged patients
