Cormet Gets FDA Approval, Stryker To Market As Early As 3Q:07

On Tuesday the FDA approved Corin's Cormet Hip Resurfacing System, introducing competition for Smith & Nephew's Birmingham Hip Resurfacing System in the U.S. Prior to Tuesday's announcement, the BHR was the only resurfacing system approved for the U.S. market. An FDA Advisory panel recommended Corin's Cormet for approval with conditions back in February of this year, and Tuesday's approval of Cormet is contingent upon a surgeon education protocol that emphasizes patient selection criteria.
Stryker has a 10-year distribution agreement with Corin for U.S. sales of Cormet and plans to begin marketing Cormet as early as 3Q:07. This new product offering will likely revitalize Stryker's Hip division, whose growth has been trailing that of Stryker's other orthopedic divisions.
