Paris, July 19, 2007 - Scient'x, a privately-held company dedicated to spinal implants, announced today that its second-generation cervical disc prosthesis has been implanted in 1.000 patients worldwide.
The Discocerv artificial disc offers a unique design to restore normal biomechanical motion after discectomy and to prevent adjacent level degeneration. The implant and instruments have been carefully developed with leading surgeons in order to provide a one-step only surgical technique, as easy as the insertion of a cervical cage.
The Discocerv was launched at the 6th Spine Arthroplasty Society Meeting in May 2006 and has received wide acceptance in more than 20 countries so far. The absence of screws or keels to protect the vertebral endplates and the short learning curve thanks to easy implantation are among the main benefits brought to spinal surgeons and to their patients by Scient'x Discocerv.
The first generation, the Cervidisc artificial disc, was one of the pioneer cervical disc prosthesis as its first implantation in a patient in Europe took place in June 1999.
Olivier Carli, C.E.O. of Scient'x, said: "This important milestone proves that Discocerv has become in one year one of the major products on the cervical disc prosthesis market which is expected to reach more than $500 million by 2010."
As one of the company's flagship products, the Discocerv has driven Scient'x growth outside the US of more than 15% for the first quarter of 2007.
