Swiss orthopedics giant Synthes announced today that it is purchasing N-Spine for $30 million cash upfront, $45 million cash for certain milestones and additional undisclosed payments for reaching certain sales targets.
Synthes is one of the leaders in the spine market and has a strong portfolio of fusion devices and artificial discs. However, this will be its first foray into dynamic stabilization technology, whereby pedicle screw constructs are created with flexible or segmented rods.
N-Spine is a California-based company that has developed the NFlex, a rod with a segmented elastomeric and metal outer sheath which allows for controlled motion of the rod relative to the pedicle screws. However, within the US the device's clearance is as an adjunct to spinal fusion only.
