U.S. News and World Report Names 10 Best Ortho Hospitals BY LAUREN UZDIENSKI, JULY 14, 2008

Hospital for Special Surgery topped U.S. News and World Report's list of the best ortho hospitals in the country, boasting the most discharges of any orthopedic hospital, a large nursing staff and advanced technologies. A low mortality index (0.14), status as a nurse magnet hospital, stellar patient services and presence of a trauma center round out the rankings' criteria. HSS also scored the top spot in a "reputation" index, determined by a random sample of 200 orthopedic surgeons who were asked to list the five hospitals they considered the best in the specialty. 44% named HSS in their responses.

7/7 for patient services; 0/1 for advanced technologies; fewest discharges (1,596 over three years, compared to HSS' 11,706) of the top 10.

Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
0.78 mortality index, the highest in the top 10; trauma center.

NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, New York
