Biologic Orthopaedic Society Formed to Promote the Use of Orthobiologics
BY LAUREN UZDIENSKI, MARCH 9, 2009
At AAOS last month, Allan Mishra, M.D. and Pietro S. Randelli, M.D. co-chaired the inaugural meeting of the Biologic Orthopaedic Society, a new organization designed to further the study and market adoption of biologics worldwide. Prior to BOS's formation, “No one group represented a vibrant research community that is hard at work developing these applications for orthopedic use,” said Dr. Mishra. The group's goals are to discuss, collaborate on and disseminate scientific research on orthobiologics.
The BOS currently has 12 members, who name research interests such as stem cell therapy for OA and other musculoskeletal conditions; platelet-rich plasma injections for chronic tendinitis, disc regeneration and accelerated healing; molecular and cell biology and biomaterials for tendon-to-bone healing; and recombinant bone morphogenic proteins to repair fresh fractures.
The organization admits new members by invitation only, though there is an application on the group's website.
