Mayo Clinic, Hospital for Special Surgery Top List of Best Orthopedic Hospitals BY LAUREN UZDIENSKI, JULY 22, 2009

U.S. News and World Report's published their annual list of the best ortho hospitals in the country this week. Below are the top ten, as determined from statistical analysis on factors including mortality rate, discharge rate and staffing, as well as a reputation score calculated from a sample of 200 physicians.

Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.
40.5% of orthopedic surgeons responding to the publication's survey recommend this hospital for challenging cases; key technologies include computer-assisted orthopedic surgery; trauma center

Hospital for Special Surgery, New York
39.5% of orthopedic surgeons responding to the publication's survey recommend this hospital for challenging cases; tied with NYU Medical Center for the highest patient safety score of the top 10; most discharges of the top 10; key technologies include computer-assisted orthopedic surgery; patient services include an arthritis treatment center; lowest mortality rate of the top 10

Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston
Offers computer-assisted orthopedic surgery; patient services include an arthritis treatment center; trauma center

Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland
Key technologies include computer-assisted orthopedic surgery; no trauma center

Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore
Fewest discharges of the top 10; key technologies include computer-assisted orthopedic surgery; patient services include an arthritis treatment center; trauma center

Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
Highest mortality rate of the top 10; offers computer-assisted orthopedic surgery; patient services include an arthritis treatment center; trauma center

New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell
Patient services include an arthritis treatment center; trauma center

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City
Tied with the Mayo Clinic for lowest patient safety score of the top 10; trauma center

NYU Medical Center, New York
Tied with HSS for the highest patient safety score of the top 10; patient services include an arthritis treatment center; trauma center

UPMC-University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
Offers computer-assisted orthopedic surgery; trauma center

The list is roughly the same as last year's, with one exception: University of Iowa joined the top ten, and Rush University Medical Center in Chicago slipped to the number 12 spot in the rankings.
