Citing registry data, the UK released a medical device alert noting that DePuy's ASR acetabular cups have a higher-than-expected revision rate. While regulators anticipated a revision rate of about 3%, the actual rate has been closer to 4-5%. In addition to the registry data, two of the UK clinical sites that implant the device have echoed the higher failure rate. DePuy has been marketing the device in the UK since 2003. more
Per the recommendations of a transparency task force, a wider range of information about drug and device applications may become publicly available. Currently, the FDA only makes approvals public; an exception is made for applications that call for a panel recommendation, and of course some companies provide updates on their FDA filing status. more
A Michigan Tech Ph.D. candidate may have discovered a less expensive way to roughen the surface of titanium medical devices. Cells don't adhere to the smooth surface of untreated titanium, so devices are typically treated to give them a rougher surface before implantation. Instead of etching platinum into a device surface, which can cost $1,700 per ounce, Tolou Shokufar has devised a way of anodizing the material using a titanium alloy and copper. more

A new bill proposed by the Massachusetts state legislature would force physicians to participate in Medicare, Medicaid and state health programs as a condition of licensure. The law would set physician pay at 110% of the Medicare reimbursement rate, which could pose financial hurdles for physicians in private practice. more
Today CDRH director Jeffrey Shuren will host a town hall meeting in Bloomington, Minnesota. On the agenda is an overview of the device group's 2010 priorities, but Shuren is also looking to get feedback from the device industry and the public.
Future town hall meetings will be held in Boston on June 22nd and Los Angeles in October. more
President Obama was adamant in the weeks leading up to the healthcare reform vote that costs would not exceed $1 trillion over a decade. The package passed at a projected spend of $940 billion, but now the CBO is expecting the overhaul to cost at least another $115 billion. The additional costs reflect administrative expenses and other "discretionary" funding measures to be approved by Congress at future dates. more
