FDA News reported (subscription required) comments from agency spokesman Dick Thompson in response to a device industry survey published last week. The study, partially funded by the MDMA, concluded that the agency's process is slow, costly and unpredictable compared to the EU's. more
Adding to the body of literature on hip resurfacing is a new level-four study published in JBJS. The paper emphasized that the best outcomes were associated with appropriate patient and implant selection, with the authors concluding from a case series that metal-on-metal resurfacing does offer long-term device survival in young, active patients. more

A new medtech survey found that compared to the U.S. regulatory process, European approvals were faster, and EU regulatory authorities received substantially higher ratings in the area of "predictability," "reasonableness" and "transparency." As for "overall experience," 75% of respondents rated their regulatory experience in the EU excellent or very good, compared to 16% for the FDA. more

A study conducted at the Osaka University Graduate School of Dentistry in Japan identified the topical application of fibroblast growth factor-2 as an efficacious solution for tissue healing in patients with periodontitis. more

Kuros announced that they have regained rights to three biomaterials that were in development with Baxter. The original agreement was signed in 2005 and related to combining Baxter's Tisseel fibrin sealant with Kuros' technology. more

Synthes announced the acquisition of the Anspach Effort, a manufacturer of high-speed surgical power tools for use in orthopedic, neuro and ENT procedures. The transaction will enable Synthes to create a dedicated power tools division, which they anticipate will bring in $200 million in annual sales. more

California's state stem cell agency awarded a $5.4 million grant to UCLA orthopedic surgery professors Dr. Bruno Peault and Dr. Chia Soo, who will conduct their research at UCLA's Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research. Drs. Peault and Soo will use the funds to form and regenerate bone from adipose-derived stem cells. more
