First Baby Boomers Turn 65

On January 1, the first of the Baby Boom generation turned 65, reaching Medicare eligibility and portending growth in medtech consumption.
Along with technological advancements and expansion into international markets, the aging of the Baby Boomers has been cited as growth driver for the musculoskeletal industry. According to AAOS, most total hip and total knee replacement candidates are between 60 and 80 years of age, and the population in those age groups is rapidly increasing. The New York Times reports that 10,000 people will turn 65 every day for the next 19 years, and by 2030, 18% of the population will be above 65, compared to 13% today.
