BY SANDER DUNCAN, JANUARY 12, 2011
MAKO announced selected 4Q:10 operating results on Monday, placing 13 new RIO systems in commercial sites during the quarter. These new robots bring units sold worldwide in 2010 to 33, while increasing the total domestic base of systems to 67. Utilization rates are notably up, with an average of 6.7 procedures per system in 4Q:10. This rate is up 18% sequentially and nearly 12% over 4Q:09. Increases in procedure volume on the RIO system drove this utilization growth, as 1,146 MAKOplasty procedures were performed in 4Q:10 representing a 104% increase over the year ago period. MAKO announced a total of 3,485 such procedures were performed in 2010, while a total of 5,869 have been implemented since June 2006 when the procedure was introduced.
