The House Energy and Commerce panel recently held a hearing on the “Impact of Medical Device Regulation on Jobs and Patients.” The hearing follows a trio of studies from Boston Consulting Group, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Stanford University which detail inefficiencies in the U.S. device approval process and the subsequent drag on medical innovation. more

Reuters reports today that 20 bidders are making offers on AstraTech, Astra Zeneca's dental implant and urology arm. The division had 2010 revenues of $535 million, and offers are said to be reaching the $2 billion range. That would mean a 3.7x revenue multiple. more
ArthroCare's stock is continuing its upward trend this week with some new product launches in spine and sports medicine. The company is up 22% over the last 30 days, which can be attributed to momentum from new products, a strong 4Q and the conclusion of an SEC investigation into its accounting practices. more

After a long and very public negotiation, Genzyme has agreed to be acquired by Sanofi-Aventis for $74 per share, with the total deal valued at around $20.1 billion. more
The struggling Nobel Biocare announced that Richard Laube will take the helm at the company, effective May 1. Mr. Laube will join Nobel from Nestle SA, where he was CEO of the Nutrition division. more
This morning Straumann reported 7% revenue growth in 4Q:10, accelerating from 3% in 3Q:10 and matching rebounding dental implant sales at Biomet and Zimmer. North American revenue growth, according to Straumann's press release, reached the double digits, an encouraging sign for an industry that has struggled in the recession. more
Smith & Nephew announced yesterday that David Illingworth, CEO, will retire from the company following their annual meeting on April 14th. Illingworth made the announcement during the company's annual earnings call, reporting a "strong finish to 2010." more

The FDA announced this morning plans for a Medical Device Innovation Initiative, which is designed to make the regulatory process for new technologies more efficient. Among the proposed changes? Faster review times, permitting data collected OUS in submissions and clearer communication of data requirements more
The FDA announced on Friday that they've cleared the first mobile radiology app, meaning that scans like x-rays, CTs and MRIs can now be viewed on the go. The app is called Mobile MIM, and it's available for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. more
As predicted, the Senate voted 51-47 against repealing healthcare reform. The bill passed the House last month, but after Senate leaders initially refused to bring the legislation to the floor, the repeal act was tacked onto an aviation bill. more
