X-Rays Go Mobile: FDA Clears First Radiology App
BY LAUREN UZDIENSKI, FEBRUARY 7, 2011
The FDA announced on Friday that they've cleared the first mobile radiology app, meaning that scans like x-rays, CTs and MRIs can now be viewed on the go. The app is called Mobile MIM, and it's available for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.
Mobile MIM is officially cleared for viewing images and making diagnoses, with the FDA noting that performance was tested on multiple devices. The agency found that image quality was adequate for diagnosing a patient, despite "variations in luminance levels" that can exist between devices. However, the FDA did add in their press release notes that Mobile MIM is "not intended to replace full workstations and is indicated for use only when there is no access to a workstation."
The app is available in 14 languages and in markets around the world.
As illustrated by the Mobile MIM, mobile technology is playing an increasingly large role in how and where physicians practice. iPads can also support a paperless office or aid in presentations to patients. Medical technology companies are taking advantage of the iPad's efficiency as well. Sales teams at Zimmer, Stryker and Medtronic are being equipped with the tablets, which place a wealth of product information at a representative's fingertips.
