Alphatec Holdings, Inc. Two new studies on the ProDisc-C and ProDisc-L total discs showed that the cervical discs performed as well as fusion and required fewer secondary procedures than fusion, while a ProDisc-L study showed that replacing a disc is less costly than a fusion. more
TranS1 announced the 510(k) clearance of a new lumbar fusion device Thursday morning, lifting its share price to levels not seen since 2009. In a busy week, the company also announced the publication of two efficacy and safety studies, and lowered its 1Q:11 guidance. more

Corin announced earnings this morning, reporting 2010 revenues of £44.8 million (approximately US $73.3 million), up 6% year over year. The company also entered a distribution agreement with MAKO to provide the robotics manufacturer with hip implants for its Rio system. more

A study published this week in JBJS found a link between the severity of OA symptoms and depression. The authors found that patients reporting severe pain were more likely to be depressed, and this was particularly true of patients with less-severe disease. The data helps to explain the discrepancy between reported symptoms and what shows up on an X-ray. more

The Medicare claims database has been closed since 1979, when the Florida Medical Association and the American Medical Association persuaded a court to keep doctors' pay private. Now two Senators, Charles Grassley and Democrat Ron Wyden of Oregon, are working on legislation that would allow the public access to the database, which contains records of physician claims and reimbursement amounts. more
Bloomberg reported on Friday that David Floyd plans to step down from his role as worldwide president of DePuy Orthopaedics at the end of this month. Mr. Floyd, who has been in the role since 2007, intends to "pursue interests outside the company." more
A new report from the Dartmouth Atlas Project - an organization that studies healthcare utilization by geography - found that likelihood of Medicare patients receiving 10 surgical procedures varied by zip code. This suggests that the surgeon is the driver of whether a patient has surgery or not, and the goal of releasing this data, according to the report, is encouraging shared decision-making between physician and patient. more
