The backlash against Infuse is escalating this week with the announcement that the Spine Journal would dedicate its June issue to bias in published data on Infuse. In addition to highlighting the under-reporting of adverse events, the journal argues for improvements in transparency and disclosure requirements in the scientific literature. more

Bonovo Orthopedics is launching Bonovo Recon, a new division dedicated solely to hip and knee products. Operations will begin this year with a suite of hip and knee implants available to Chinese markets. more

Dentsply has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Astra Tech at a valuation of $1.8 billion, approximately 3.4x 2010 sales. They will finance the transaction with cash on hand, commercial paper and long-term debt and expect the deal to close before the end of 2011. more
In a letter to Medtronic, Senators Baucus and Grassley requested documentation relating to Infuse consultants, adverse events, FDA reporting and journal articles. The investigation follows recent news concerning a link between Infuse and male sterility. more
The Financial Times broke rumors yesterday evening that Dentsply was the sole party negotiating to acquire Astra Tech. The deal is reportedly valued at about $1.8 billion. more
A new device developed at the University of Pittsburgh uses RFID technology to wirelessly transmit data about an orthopedic implant to physicians. The device, called Ortho-Tag, is attached to an implantable device, and information can be recalled later by holding a handheld probe to the patient's skin. more
Orthofix announced this morning that President and CEO Alan Milinazzo will resign as of August 1, though he will remain on the Board of Directors. Succeeding him will be Robert S. Vaters, the company's COO. more

The FDA posted minutes from a recent MDUFA reauthorization meeting, providing some insight into difficulties in the current user-fee program and goals for MDUFA III. The program is currently set to expire at the end of FY 2012. more
DePuy Orthopaedics announced today that Andrew Ekdahl has been promoted to the position of president, filling the role left vacant by the resignation of David Floyd in March. Mr. Ekdahl previously served as franchise vice president of DePuy Europe, Middle East and Africa. more
Synthes and Eli Lilly announced an “exclusive worldwide collaboration agreement” to jointly license, research and develop new and existing osteoporosis treatments. The agreement includes two development programs: Synthes' co-development of existing early stage compounds at Lilly, and the co-promotion of Lilly's current osteoperosis drug Foreto. more
BioMimetic Therapeutics announced on Tuesday that they've completed enrollment in their Augment Rotator Cuff Graft pilot study, and they've also been granted some additional patent protection for Augment through 2029. Despite this news, the stock sank to a new 52-week low. more

The orthopedics M&A spree continues with Stryker's acquisition of French extremity manufacturer Memometal Technologies. Stryker will pay $150 million in cash for the company, plus up to $12 million in milestone payments. Memometal recorded about $30 million in sales last year. more
DJO Global appointed Michael P. Mogul as the company’s new Chief Executive Officer, effective June 13, 2011. Mr. Mogul most recently served as Stryker’s Group President, Orthopaedics, and will be replaced by Kevin Lobo, current Group President, Neurotechnology and Spine. Mr. Mogul is replacing Les Cross at DJO, who announced his retirement in January. more
