Earnings
On July 28th, Dentsply reported 2Q:11 sales of $609.4 million, up 7.8% compared to the 2Q:10 sales of $565.1 million. Sales beat estimates by $31.6 million. Excluding precious metals, they reported 8.7% sales growth. Net income was $74.2 million, up 6.1% from 2Q:10. EPS, on a non-GAPP basis, were $0.55, up 10% from $0.50 a year ago and beating estimates by $0.04. The sales and earning figures are record numbers for Dentsply.
On July 27th, Zimmer reported 2Q:11 earnings. Dental sales for the quarter were $67 million, up 20% from reported 2Q:10 sales and up 16% on a constant currency basis. Organic growth for the dental segment was estimated to be approximately 9%.
M&A
Straumann acquired 30% of Dental Wings for an undisclosed amount. Dental Wings develops CAD/CAM software for dental markets. This acquisition is in follow up the March announcement that Dental Wings, 3M ESPE and Strumann were partnering to create an open global standard software platform for use across a range of dental applications.
Product Introduction and Update
Enhanced Geometry Solutions, a 3D modeling company headquartered in Bologna, Italy, launched their DScan 3D scanner. The DScan 3D Scanner is precise up to 15 microns and exports data in common formats used by CAD/CAM applications.
Clinical
The Journal of Dental Research reports that a group at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine has completed a study in which oral healthcare professionals identified previously undiagnosed cases of diabetes. They found patients presenting with greater than or equal to 26% deep pocket cavities or 4 missing teeth were correctly identified as diabetic or pre-diabetic 73% of the time. When additionally adding a hemoglobin test, correct identification increased to 92%.
Appointments
The Nobel Biocare Board of Directors will propose Michel Orsinger as the next Chairman at the company’s 2012 annual general meeting.
Robert Blankemeyer has been elected to the Board of Directors for Biohorizons Inc.
Robert Gottlander, DDS has joined Henry Schein as Vice President, Prosthetic Solutions. Previously, he was Executive Vice President of Global Marketing and Products for Nobel Biocare AG.In his new position, he will work on marketing and education programs related to dental prosthetics.
Andreas Meldau has joined Henry Schein as President, European Dental Specialties and Exclusive Products. In this newly created position, he will concentrate on “orthodontics, implants, oral surgery and endodontics.” Previously he was CEO of Coltene Holding AG.
