NuVasive announced plans to acquire Impulse Monitoring, a provider of intra-operative neuromonitoring services, for $80 million in cash and stock. Impulse Monitoring employs over 150 neurophysiologists, who remain in the operating room during spine procedures and function as part of the surgical team, interpreting real-time neuromonitoring data and supporting patient safety. The deal adds a service component to NuVasive's revenue stream, which has historically focused on implants. more

A new study published in JBJS determined several independent predictors of mortality for spine surgery patients, including old age, infected wounds, and duration of the operation. The study is notable for its robust patient-based data set, encompassing 3,475 patients undergoing several spinal procedures over a four year time frame. more
On September 16th, President Obama signed off on the most substantial U.S. patent overhaul since the 1950s. Most importantly, the America Invents Act will change the intellectual property infrastructure from a first-to-invent to a first-to-file system, a move that may favor large companies. more

A jury ruled that NuVasive infringed on three of Medtronic's patents, while Medtronic was also guilty of infringing on one of NuVasive's. NuVasive was ordered to pay $101 million in damages and royalties on each of the three patents in question, while Medtronic must pay NuVasive $660,000. more
Robert Palmisano has been named President and CEO of Wright Medical, effective September 17th. He joins Wright Medical from ev3, an endovascular device company. The press release notes that during his two-year tenure, ev3's market capitalization more than tripled, from approximately $800 million in 2008 to $2.6 billion in July 2010. more
The bad news keeps piling up for DePuy and their ASR metal-on-metal hip, with a new batch of registry data indicating that almost a third of implanted devices failed after just six years. The company is already anticipating more than $1 billion in litigation and other expenses associated with their metal-on-metal portfolio, including medical costs for affected ASR patients, and those costs could continue to climb as the extent of the product failures are realized. more
Wright Medical is launching an operational restructuring plan to enhance profitability and rejuvenate stagnant growth. The plan includes reducing international exposure and decreasing workforce by 6%. Meanwhile, Wright has voluntarily extended its DPA by 12 months. more

A new study evaluating the 2.3% device industry excise tax quantifies some of the potential harm the tax may cause. Mandated by the Affordable Care Act, the tax is scheduled to go into effect in 2013. more
In a recent interview, Medtronic CEO Omar Ishrak outlined his push into the Asia Pacific region and his particular focus on India as a source of growth. These plans follow Medtronic's recently-announced intentions to double their workforce in China by 2016. more
Integra is expanding its extremity offering with plans to acquire Texas-based Ascension Orthopedics. Integra will buy the company for $65 million in cash, and in doing so, complement their lower extremity portfolio with new upper extremity and shoulder devices. Ascension represents Integra's first entry into the shoulder market. more

A new study, published in Health Affairs and written up in the New York Times, finds that orthopedic surgeons are paid substantially more in the U.S. than in other countries and that rising healthcare costs can be linked to physician fees. Orthopedic surgeons in the U.S. earn an average of $442,450 annually, compared to less than $210,000 in other countries. Further, both public and private pay for hip replacements is substantially higher in the U.S. than other countries. more
Smith & Nephew's stock is up 9% over the past month as fresh takeover rumors swirl around the company. Similar speculation occurred late last year, with JNJ as the potential acquiror. The latest chatter identifies Stryker as making a bid for the company, though JNJ, who is suspected to have made an offer for SNN earlier this year, has been mentioned as well. more
