Alphatec Spine, Inc. today announced that it has realigned the leadership roles of Dirk Kuyper and Les Cross. Mr. Kuyper, formerly President and Chief Executive Officer, will assume the role of President, Global Commercial Operations and will remain a member of the Board of Directors. Les Cross, formerly Non-Executive Chairman of the Board, will assume the role of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. The realignment is designed to enhance Alphatec Spine's future revenue growth and operating excellence. more

The European Commission, the antitrust authority currently reviewing J&J's planned acquisition of Synthes, announced this week that their deadline for approving the transaction has been extended by 12 days to April 26th. Regulators will use the extension to review concessions offered by J&J to facilitate the deal, which are widely believed to include spine or trauma product line divestitures. more
Congress passed a new patch on physician payment legislation that will keep reimbursement rates stable through 2012, effectively putting the issue off until after the election this fall. The patch, which is included in a larger package of payroll and unemployment benefits, prevented pay cuts of more than 27%. The government will spend about $20 billion to maintain pay rates, with the funds to come from the Medicaid budget as well as obesity and smoking prevention programs created by President Obama's healthcare reform legislation. more
Studies have shown that women may be up to five times more susceptible to ACL tears than men. Since that trend surfaced, researchers have been speculating as to the cause, and potential reasons included more laxity in the ligament or that women have weaker or smaller ligaments compared to men. Now a new paper suggests that geometry has more to do with the risk of ACL damage than gender. more

The AAOS released data last week on the prevalence of knee replacement in the aging U.S. population. The study, based on sources ranging from census data to osteoarthritis reports, found that 4.7% of adults over 50 have undergone a total knee replacement. That's 4.5 million patients in absolute terms, and this trend appears to be increasing: the number of TKR surgeries doubled over the past decade, and younger patients represent the fastest-growing segment of the TKR population. more

In a surprise announcement yesterday, Stryker Chairman, President and CEO Stephen MacMillan stated that he will resign his post for family reasons. Stepping in as interim CEO will be VP and CFO Curt Hartman, with William Parfet, currently Lead Independent Director, appointed Non-Executive Chairman. The company will consider both internal and external candidates in searching for a permanent CEO. more
Zimmer and ISTO Technologies provided an update yesterday on their research program on engineered juvenile cartilage for the repair of damaged knees. The company plans to enroll up to 225 patients at 25 sites in a new phase III study, which will compare the use of the DeNovo ET Engineered Tissue Graft to microfracture for the repair of cartilage defects in the knee. more
In separate announcements yesterday, both Orthofix and Smith & Nephew reported that respective investigations by the U.S. government into certain business practices are being resolved. Orthofix's stock reacted positively to the news, with shares up 4% in morning trading. Smith & Nephew's stock is down 1% this morning. more

Reuters and others are reporting this morning that the FDA and industry have reached an agreement for the 2012 re-authorization of MDUFA, the legislation that allows the FDA to collect user fees from industry. User fees contribute about a third of the agency's budget. more
