Silver Lake Medical Center and Blue Belt Technologies Announce First Hospital in Los Angeles to Implement CT-free Robotic Orthopedic Surgery BY EDITOR, NOVEMBER 16, 2015

Silver Lake Medical Center and Blue Belt Technologies announced the completion of the first procedure with the Navio orthopedic surgical system to help surgeons perform precise and accurate partial knee replacement surgeries. The Navio system helps Silver Lake Medical Center offer its patients one of the most advanced surgical technologies in Los Angeles.

The Blue Belt Technologies Navio technology for partial knee replacements utilizes an advanced CT-free intra-operative registration, planning and navigation platform to assist the surgeon in building patient-specific surgical plans. The Navio robotic-controlled handpiece assists the surgeon in preparing the bone with the precision of robotics in a hand-held, freehand sculpting technique.

“The options for the active patient with Unicompartment knee arthritis have been historically limited to waiting until the arthritis had progressed to the point where they were indicated for a total knee arthroplasty,” said Dr. Christopher Goring, Orthopedic surgeon at Silver Lake Medical Center. “The Unicompartment knee is technically challenging because it necessitates implant positioning within the constraints of each patient's unique anatomy. Failure to detect these subtle differences, which in some instances can be as little as 3 degrees or 1-2 mm may be the difference between a successful outcome and a poor outcome. It requires a level of precision with regard to implant position that I do not believe is possible with simple visual cues. The Blue Belt system allows me to provide additional options for my patients. I believe that it is an excellent technological advancement that will improve the quality of care we can give to our patients.”

With no pre-operative CT-scan required, the Navio system integrates easily into existing knee-replacement workflows. This allows the patient to receive the benefits of robotic-guidance without additional time spent for pre-operative procedures. Instead, the surgeon registers the patient during the procedure using kinematic reconstruction and anatomic landmarks. This information assists the surgeon in planning the implant location and balancing the knee’s ligaments for a more natural feeling knee.

During bone preparation, the Navio robotic-controlled handpiece is tracked in real-time in relation to the intended resurfacing plan and is computer controlled to remove only the bone required to place the implant.

The Blue Belt Technologies Navio surgical system will be used in many of the partial knee replacement procedures performed each year at Silver Lake Medical Center.
